Region of Southern Moravia

Southern Moravia comprises the district of Znojmo, Mikulov, Kyjov and Uherské Hradiště. The climate of the region is warm so that South Moravia is one of the richest parts of the Czech Republic. It has a great natural beauty, unique reserves of fauna and flora, a landscape dotted with fishponds and woodland. The southeastern area is famous for its colourful national costumes. The vineyards cover the large portions of the land, local wine cellars have typical folk architecture.

The region of Southern Moravia has been settled since time immemorial as proved by the remarkable archaeological finds of the Venus of Věstonice and Hluboké Mašůvky, the excavations of mammoth hunters near Pavlov and highly developed culture of Great Moravia Empire unearthed at Mikulov, Staré Město and in Pohansko district. These places have been designated as Conservation Areas and have been declared National Cultural Monuments. Other places definitely worth visiting are Vranov castle, chateau in Lednice, historic towns Valtice and Mikulov and also the Moravian Karst with unique caves north of Brno.
