Brno is the centre of the South Moravia and with the population of almost 400 000 is the second largest city of the Czech Republic. It is also a city of international trade.
The first scriptural report about Brno comes from the 10th century, when Brno was only a small colony. Into a city this colony was converted in the 13th century. In the 17th century it became a trade and industrial centre. Especially textile, machine and brewing industry was developing and this remains till now. Brno is also famous for its historical monuments, such as Špilberk fortress, which was founded in 1277 and in the 18th century was known in Europe as 'The Prison of Nations'. Other places of interest are for example the St. Peter's and Paul's Cathedral, Old town hall, Mahen Theatre, Janáček Theatre, Fountain Parnas and the Villa of Tugendhat. For those who are interested in motorbike races is Brno known for Masaryk circle, where these races take place.
Brno also offers many places of amusement, not only for young people. There are many cinemas, theatres, sport halls, youth clubs, museums and libraries.
